One time, someone bought a phone that I really liked and I sowed a seed by giving him money.
This behavior is in the reverse because we generally say “You have to wash it for us” in Nigerian lingua. When someone buys a house or car or anything really, they buy their friends drinks. So as you’d imagine, my giving him money was unusual behavior.
I remembered the event today as a friend shared a beautiful story of her experience and I thought to send her some money… This person had already won in this story, so why send her even more money? I realised I hadn’t fully articulated why I gave that friend with the new phone in the university 1,000 naira. So today yet again, I was responding to some internal compass without knowing why.
Meditation came next and I saw a few things…
It is always seed time
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; Consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no chief, Overseer, or ruler, Provideth her bread in the summer, And gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.Proverbs 6:6-11 ASV
When the scripture talked about how we should be like the ants that prepared for the time of lack in the time of plenty, what we sometimes fail to see is that the time of lack is the planting time and the time of plenty (harvest) is the time seed is provided for planting.
While we reap, we should plant. AT THE SAME TIME. Sow while reaping plenty, sow when there’s “nothing” available to your eyes.
If in the time of plenty, you choose to plant, you will eat in the time of little.
In the time of little, plant as well. Your last harvest provided seeds. New connections, new skills.
There are two types of days, the days you plant and the day you eat. Remember to plant on both days. CLICK TO TWEETHassan Anifowose, 2020
Your seed is not always tangible.
And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.Job 42:10 KJV
Job had to forgive his friends condescension and pray for them and then he was blessed. Sometimes, forgiveness is hard so that was a sacrifice. He sowed and reaped. He had no money. He’d become poor. His prayer was seed.
Lack is an issue of perspective- Everyone has a seed
…but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.Matthew 13:12b KJV
Christians will probably be familiar with that scripture.
The fact that “even that he hath” is taken away means that we do have something. We either don’t see or don’t consider anything important.
Our seed is either cash, skill (talent) or exchangeable assets.
People that group themselves into the category of the helpless cannot see their seed or disregard it. CLICK TO TWEETKaeto
The temptation is to take from the abundant or rich friend but the instruction is to give that friend that just received.
Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.Matthew 25:28-29 KJV
You should sow where there is the presence of growth not where the landowner is sure of drought. You’ll reap a reward there.
